Bill and Sandy Sanchez, Potters from Tigard Oregon
|
How we got started in the Pottery Business.
Bill has been making pottery for 30 years. His first experience with forming shapes was as a little boy when
he and his mom (a sketch and oil paint artist) made dough figures and baked them in the oven. Bill enjoyed
many art classes in junior high and high school but was drawn mostly to throwing clay pots on the spinning
wheel.
Sandy and Bill took classes and Bill taught Beginning Ceramics at The Memorial Union Craft Center at
Oregon State University. After graduating with a Masters Degree and moving to Portland, Bill took several
semesters of Ceramics at Portland Community College and at the Multnomah Art Center.
Bill continued his studies in Animal Nutrition completing a Ph.D at the University of Florida where he and
Sandy also found time to raise two young children and take courses at the University Art Center. After a
move to Idaho in 1992 Bill bought a wheel and began the slow but steady process of putting together a
pottery studio.
In 1997 Bill and Sandy and their two children, Melinda and Eric, moved 'home' to Oregon where Bill once
again took ceramics classes at the Multnomah Art Center. Bill also demonstrated pottery to Melinda and
Eric's elementary school classes and taught Ceramics as a guest lecturer at Tigard High School. He also has
led several Boy Scouts through the Pottery Merit Badge.
Sandy has always had an interest in Pottery mostly doing hand building. She took her first formal classes in
2005. Bill's most treasured piece is a beautiful square shaped bowl with a rich Shino glaze that Sandy made
in her first formal class - she is a natural (he loves it so much it is pictured to the left and on several other
pages of the website).
In 2005 Bill and Sandy launched 'From Dust to Clay' the name of their Pottery Business and finished
equipping their studio.
Our art pieces mostly find themselves in the hands of family and friends. We also have sold numerous
functional and decorative pottery pieces at community art sales and have done several commissions.
Currently we are creating a series of fish vases and bowls (called The Spawning Vessels Series) as a tribute
to the mighty fish that we enjoy seeing in the Northwest. We also produce unique Nativity Scenes,
particularly popular during the Christmas Season.
If you are interested in any of the pieces shown or want a special pot created from scratch, please call or
send us an email through the 'Contact Us' page.
Thanks for visiting, Bill and Sandy

Artists Statement
Our journey with clay is inspired by the basic elements of water, earth and
fire. We attempt to capture the essence of these elements in form, color
and function. Our forms include vessels to hold flowers, plants, candle
light, food and a simple Nativity. The smooth textures and earthy browns,
blues and green colors in our work represent the abundance of clay, water
and plant life in the beautiful Oregon environment that we live and work in.
We are also inspired by the spawning fish in the NW and look for ways to
alter our basic shapes to allow them to jump out of the surface our designs.
"Remember that thou hast made me of clay; and wilt thou turn me to dust
again?" (Job 10:9)
